November 24 – December 1, 2011
As we honored our courageous veterans for their service and sacrifice on Veterans Day one local Jubilee Park Resident encouraged her fellow neighbors to honor and help our Veterans every day of the year. “November 11 is Veterans Day but what about tomorrow? And the other 364 days of the year? With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season just around the corner, it can be easy to move on to other matters,” Miss Claudia Lozano said.
On a recent crisp November morning Lozano and a group of residents gathered outside sipping coffee, and soaking up the fall sunshine to share their thoughts on what the community could do to help the veterans and homeless citizens. Living close to a busy freeway the residents see lots of hungry and homeless people wandering the streets. Homeless citizens shouldn’t be categorized as a large, homogeneous group; instead, they should be seen as individuals from every circumstance and background. It’s disheartening to learn that veterans who have put their lives on the line for our freedoms end up homeless and living in the streets. By being homeless, these citizens face obstacles most people don’t have to face. Lozano has taken on a personal project to provide a warm meal and a listening ear for the homeless every day of the year. “Their clothes may be torn and tattered but their eyes express a brave past and a strong soul and their personal stories pull the strings at your heart and soul and leave you with a lump in your throat and a tear in your eye,” she said.
Now more than ever, our veterans and the homeless citizens need the support of communities like our Miss Lozano said. Please reach out to your elected officials and all who care about helping the homeless in your communities. Kind Regards,
Norma Hernandez
